4 Head Coaches Out After Season Ends

December 30, 2008 · Filed Under Cleveland Browns, Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions, New York Jets · Comment

After the 2008 NFL season ended, four teams deiced that it was time to move forward and look towards the future. The New York Jets, Detroit Lions and Cleveland Browns had very disappointing season and moving in a new direction was probably the best thing to do. But, the shocking was the firing of coach Mike Shanahan of the Denver Broncos.

Mike Shanahan coached the Denver Broncos for 14 seasons and won 2 Super Bowls. However, following  the collapse of this season, in which the Broncos missed the playoffs after losing to the San Diego Chargers last Sunday, the Broncos probably thought it was time for a change. Was this the right move for the Broncos?

For the Detroit Lions, after losing every game, something had to change. Coach Rod Marinelli did his best he could with the players he had, but a fresh start for the Lions will hopefully work out in the end for them. We shall see. As for the Cleveland Browns, coach Romeo Crennel’s teams had so many high expectations, but for one reason or another, it was just not meant to be.

The New York Jets were looking good this season at 8-3. Plus, the Jets had the great Bret Farve on their team and seemed to be in contention to make the playoffs and a possible Super Bowl birth. But, the Jets went 1-4 in their last 5 games and missed the playoffs. This was probably not expectable for Jets management.

As we move onto the 2009 season, well see if these moves will make a differences. Changing head coaches can be a good thing, considering the success of teams like Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins this year. But, hiring the right head coach will be the biggest decision these teams make, as their dreams of being Super Bowl champion continues.

Chargers defeat Broncos and Win AFC West Title

December 29, 2008 · Filed Under Denver Broncos, San Diego Chargers · Comment

With the AFC West title on the line Sunday night, the San Diego Chargers and Denver Broncos gave it all they had. However, in the end, the Chargers wanted this game more than the Broncos. The Chargers beat the Broncos 52-21 and capture the AFC West crown.

The game within the game was the battle between the two quarterbacks, Chargers QB Philip Rivers and Broncos QB Jay Cutler. Both quarterbacks have their own personal rivalry against each other and are not best of friends. However, what matters is the play on the field and in this game, it was the play of Philip Rivers that help the Chargers prevail. Rivers was on fire throwing for 207 yards, 2 touchdowns and a passer rating of 141.

The Chargers rushing game and offensive line were able to control the time of possession and dominated the Broncos defense. LaDainian Tomlinson look like his old self, scoring 3 touchdowns and running for 96-yards. On defense, the Chargers were able to make the plays they needed to do to win, including a curial interception by Paul Oliver as the Broncos were driving toward the end zone at the end of the 1st half. For the San Diego Chargers, this has been a crazy season, but when it counted the most, the Chargers step it up to win this game.

It is funny to think that four weeks ago, at 4-8, the chances of the San Diego Chargers making the playoffs did not look good, considering the Denver Broncos were 7-5 and just needed two wins to be the AFC West Champs. However, the Chargers did not give up on their season. The Chargers went on a three game winning streak and found themselves at 7-8. For the Broncos, they lost 2 out of 3 games which left the window open for the San Diego Chargers. This game was suppose to a battle to the end to see who would win the division, but instead it turned into a rout for the San Diego Chargers.

Now, next up for the Chargers will be Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts beat the Chargers 23-20 earlier in the season on a game winning field. However, the Chargers eliminated the Colts last year from the playoffs. Only one team can win and keep their Super Bowl dreams alive. We’ll see what happens as these teams meet up on Saturday. Stay Tuned.

December 21, 2008 · Filed Under San Diego Chargers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers · Comment

When the San Diego Chargers needed to put it all together in one game to give themselves a chance at the AFC West title, the Chargers did it. Philip Rivers continue his spectacular play and threw for 287 yards and four touchdowns. The Chargers defense made great plays, including curial interception to ice the game, as the Chargers beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 41-24.

The Chargers offense came to play in this game. LaDainian Tomlinson was able to run for 90-yards and Vincent Jackson had another great game. But, for the San Diego Chargers, Antonio Gates played his best game of the season. Gates was able to score two touchdowns. Antonio Gates also made awesome one handed catch, which you can contribute to his basketball background. On special teams, Darren Sproles made some great runs and Nate Kaeding kicked a career best, 57-yard field goal. For the Chargers defense, they made the plays they need to do to help the Chargers win, including two interceptions and a fumble recovery.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jeff Garcia threw for a touchdowns and had some great runs, including one for a touchdown. However, it was on one of those runs, when Quentin Jammer hit Jeff Garcia that left him with a cut above his nose, though he would stay in this game. However, late in the 4th quarter, Jeff Garcia was intercepted by Antoine Cason, which he ran back for a 59-yard touchdown return, which would lead to the Chargers victory.

From the beginning of this game, San Diego Chargers needed this victory to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. After the Chargers won, they needed the Denver Broncos to lose to have a shot at the AFC West title next week. The day got even better for the San Diego Chargers, as the Buffalo Bills were able to beat the Broncos, which will set up next week match-up. Now, the Broncos and the Chargers will battle for the AFC West title and go the playoffs, while the loser goes home. Stay tuned.

Broncos Lose Another Chance to Win the AFC West Title

December 21, 2008 · Filed Under Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, San Diego Chargers · Comment

At the beginning of last Sunday, the Denver Broncos just needed one win or one San Diego Chargers loss to clinch the AFC West title and go to the playoffs. However, last week, the Broncos would lose to the Carolina Panthers and the Chargers would win their game, denying the Broncos an opportunity. So, on this Sunday, since the Chargers had already beat the Tampa Buccaneers earlier in the day, all the Denver Broncos had to do was to win against the Buffalo Bills at home to win the division. But, it was not meant to be, as the Broncos loss 30-23 to the Bills.

The Broncos were winning this game and were in control early in the 1st half. The Broncos were even leading in this game, 13-0. However, the Buffalo Bills were able to get back into this game and took the lead 16-13. In the 2nd half, the Bills and Broncos exchanged leads and were tied at 23, but in the 4th quarter, the Bills were able to score the game winning touchdown. On defense, the Buffalo Bills were able to stop the Broncos twice from scoring towards the end of the game to get the victory. Despite the fact that Jay Culter threw for 359 yards and ran for two touchdowns, he could not get the game tying touchdown, as the Broncos were denied another chance to clinch the division.

Now, the Denver Broncos have to travel to San Diego and need to win against the Chargers to win the AFC West. For the Broncos, they have not made the plays they need to help them win in the last two games. The Broncos will need to play a complete game to beat the Chargers. Can the Denver Broncos get a victory against the Chargers without the help of a blown call by Referre Ed Hochuli, we shall see.

Chargers Keep Playoff Hopes Alive

December 14, 2008 · Filed Under Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, San Diego Chargers · Comment

For the San Diego Chargers, this was a great team win for many reasons. Since the Denver Broncos lost to the Carolina Panthers, this win kept the Chargers in the playoff hunt. This Chargers victory was a great example of not giving up until the game is over. The Chargers struggled throughout the whole game, but kept on playing until they made the plays to beat the Kansas City Chiefs, 22-21.

The Kansas City Chiefs were dominating and in control of this game for the most part. The Chiefs created turnovers and were able to capitalize on those Chargers mistakes. The Kansas City Chiefs were up 21-3. However, in the second half, the Chargers made the plays they needed to do to win this game. First, LaDainian Tomlinson scored a 6-yard touchdown run. Late in the fourth quarter, Malcom Floyd caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Philip Rivers. The Chargers were able to get a great onside kick by Mike Scifres, which was fumble by the Chiefs and recovered by Kassim Osgood of the Chargers. The Chargers drove the ball and Vincent Jackson scored the game winning touchdown. Though the Kansas City Chiefs had a chance to win the game on a game winning field goal, it was not meant to be for the Chiefs.

Now, the San Diego Chargers move on to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With this win the Chargers kept their playoff hopes alive, since the Denver Broncos lost. The San Diego Chargers can only control what they do. They need to keep on winning to put the pressure on the Denver Broncos. Well see if the last game will mean anything, but for now the Chargers will enjoy this victory.

The Return of Randy Moss to Oakland

December 14, 2008 · Filed Under New England Patriots, Oakland Raiders · Comment

Well, for Randy Moss, this was the first time he returned to Oakland since he was traded before the 2007 season from the Raiders to the New England Patriots. As a Oakland Raiders, Randy Moss was not a very productive player like he was for the Minnesota Vikings and now for the Patriots. Raiders fans were probably not too happy to see Moss back in Oakland as a playmaker for the New England Patriots.

As for as the game, this was a nightmare for the Oakland Raiders and the Raider Nation. Not only did Randy Moss catch two touchdown passes, after his scored, Moss pointed to the back of his jersey to remind the Raiders fans not to forget his name. And for Randy Moss, probably the most important part is that the Patriots won 49-26 to keep their playoff chances alive.
