Chargers lose to Falcons, but Rivers is ready for the Season

August 30, 2009 · Filed Under Atlanta Falcons, San Diego Chargers · Comment

On Saturday, the San Diego Chargers lost to the Atlanta Falcons, 27-24. But, the Chargers went into Atlanta looking to improve on offensive performance compared to their last preseason game. Philip Rivers played great in the game, throwing for 185 yards and one touchdown. Philip Rivers and the Chargers offense were able to move the team up and down the field, which kept the Falcons defense on their heels. Also, Darren Sproles, Vincent Jackson and Michael Bennett all looked good and are ready for the season too.

For the Atlanta Falcons, it was a chance for Michael Turner to play against his former team. Turner played well rushing for 47-yards. In the end, the Atlanta Falcons were able to drive down the field and win the game on a 5-yard touchdown pass with 9 seconds remaining.

This last touchdown drive for the Falcons was a good learning experience for the Chargers defense. The Chargers defense need to improve on their 2-minute drill and the defense needs to learn how to bend, but don’t break. Luckily for the Chargers, it was their second and third string defense that struggled to keep the lead and hopefully it doesn’t extend to their first team defense.

For the San Diego Chargers, their new $93 million dollar man, Philip Rivers, looked ready to go for the regular season. The key is that the guys up front need to protect him. And, with time in the pocket, the Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers are going to be a dangerous team this season. Stay tuned.

What’s wrong with the Eagles Signing Michael Vick?

August 14, 2009 · Filed Under Atlanta Falcons, NFL, Philadelphia Eagles · Comment

The biggest question in the NFL was who was going to sign Michael Vick? And, on Thursday, it was announced that Michael Vick had signed a one-year deal with an option for a second year with the Philadelphia Eagles. Why would the Eagles sign Michael Vick? The Eagles already have a quarterback in Donovan McNabb. Also, the Eagles already have an athletic all-pro player in Brian Westbrook. So, why would you bring in the Michael Vick and the drama that will follow him?

Well, if there was a team that is not new to controversy, it’s the Philadelphia Eagles. A couple of years ago, the Eagles had to deal with Terrell Owens. But, this is very different situation for the Eagles. Who know what issues will occur as a result of the signing of Michael Vick. However, for the Philadelphia Eagles, it is a good thing that they have a good head coach and veteran players that will be able to deal with this issue.

In terms of playing football, the Philadelphia Eagles run the “West Coast Offense”, which Michael Vick played in when he was a member of the Atlanta Falcons. Vick will need to get into football shape and we shall see how he will fit in with the rest of the team. And, if Michael Vick can be successful playing with the Philadelphia Eagles, the Eagles can be a dangerous team going into this season.

Michael Vick gets reinstated by NFL, Now What?

July 27, 2009 · Filed Under Atlanta Falcons, NFL · Comment

On Monday, NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, reinstated former NFL quarterback, Michael Vick, back into the NFL on a conditional basis. After serving 23 months for a dogfighting conviction, Michael Vick will be allowed to play football again. Now that Michael Vick will be able to return to the NFL, now what?

More questions will need to be answered before Vick can start playing football again. Which NFL team will want Michael Vick? The problem will be, who will want to deal with all the possible controversy that will surround Vick when he joins the team?

There are also football factors to consider. What type of football shape is Michael Vick in? And, how long will it take for Vick to get back into game shape? Plus, what role will Vick play? Will he be playing quarterback again, possible wide-receiver or some other position?

There is a lot to consider in deciding to bring Michael Vick in. Only time will tell which NFL team will take that chance. But, is it worth the reward? Stay tuned.

T.O. Stands Up for Michael Vick

July 27, 2009 · Filed Under Atlanta Falcons, Buffalo Bills, NFL · Comment

On Sunday morning, after training camp practice, Buffalo Bills wide-receiver, Terrell Owens, said that the NFL commissioner should let former NFL quarterback, Michael Vick, back into the NFL. Terrell Owens said that Michael Vick had paid his debt and should not be punished any further.

Owens said, “It’s almost like kicking a dead horse in the ground. … The guy’s already suffered so much. And to add a four-game suspension on a two-year prison sentence, that’s ridiculous.”

It seems odd for one controversial NFL player to stand up for another controversial player. But, is Terrell Owens correct when he says that Vick should be allowed to play right away and should not be suspended?

T.O. makes a good point, but the NFL needs to do something. If you are going to set standards for your players and if they violate those conditions, then they should be punished for their actions and not be rewarded. Players need to keep in mind that playing in the NFL is a privilege and not a right.

Michael Vick released from Federal Custody, Now What?

July 21, 2009 · Filed Under Atlanta Falcons, NFL · Comment

On Monday, former NFL quarterback, Michael Vick, had his electronic monitor removed and was released from federal custody. Michael Vick served 23 months for a dogfighting conviction and was then placed on house confinement for 60 days. Although Vick is on probation for three years, Michael Vick is a free man, so now what?

Michael Vick is suspended indefinitely from the NFL. If Michael Vick wants to play in the NFL again, he will need to convince NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, that he is remorseful and a changed man.

What if the commissioner is not convinced and does not reinstate Michael Vick? What then? But, if the commissioner does allow Michael Vick to return to the NFL, will the he allow Vick to play right away?

A lot of decisions and questions will need to be answered before Michael Vick can even think of playing in the NFL again. The main question is whether or not NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will reinstate Michael Vick. We shall see what the commissioner decides, stayed tuned.

What’s Next for Michael Vick?

May 20, 2009 · Filed Under Atlanta Falcons, NFL · Comment

Former Atlanta Falcons quarterback, Michael Vick was released from prison today. Michael Vick served 19 months in prison for a dogfighting conviction. Now that he is out of prison, so what’s next for Michael Vick? If you believe in second chances, then after Michael Vick meets all the requirements that the NFL asks him to do, then Vick should be able to play in the NFL again. However, if one believes that what Vick did was very cruel and wrong then he should not be able to have the privilege of playing in the NFL.

Michael Vick first priority should be being with his family first. Then, Vick must focus on his new job at a construction company. But, once is clear that Michael Vick could play in the NFL, should he be able to play in the NFL?

The best thing for Michael Vick to do is that he should meet with both the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and the Humane Society of the United States and try to figure out the best way for him to make his second chance a successful one. Michael Vick’s future and his chance of playing in the NFL remains a mystery. Only time will tell if Michael Vick has learned his lesson and will become a better person. Stay tuned.

Tough Defense, Rushing Attack, Cardinals Win

January 4, 2009 · Filed Under Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons · 1 Comment

Running the football was key to winning this game. With the second leading rusher in the NFL, Michael Turner and the Atlanta Falcons seemed to have the advantage. However, it was Edgerrin James and the running game along with the Arizona Cardinals defensive performance that lead to the Cardinals victory. The Cardinals defense were able to control the Falcons running game and held Michael Turner to only 42-yards rushing. But, it was also the turnovers that doomed in the Falcons, which helped the Cardinals win 30-24.

The Cardinals started out fast and attacked the Falcons with the running game. This would help set up the pass. Kurt Warner threw two long touchdown passes to help the Arizona Cardinals take the lead 14-3. However, the Atlanta Falcons would comeback with some great play by Falcons rookie QB Matt Ryan. Ryan threw two touchdowns. With the help of an interceptions which lead to the Falcons score, the Atlanta Falcons would take the lead into half-time 17-14.

However, towards the start of the 2nd half, the Cardinals got a curial turnover on defense and Antrel Rolle returned the fumble for touchdown. The Cardinals defense made the plays they needed to do to stay in control of this game. The Cardinals went back to the running game and with a mixture of the pass, the Cardinals scored a touchdown to take a 28-17. Later, the defense of the Cardinals sacked Matt Ryan for a safety. Although the Atlanta Falcons scored a late touchdown, they could stop the Arizona Cardinals on their last drive and the Cardinals were able to prevail.

Now, the Arizona Cardinals move on to the second round. For the Atlanta Falcons, they had a good season and after the Michael Vick situation, this was a great turn around for Atlanta. Matt Ryan and Michael Turner will be back, but it will have to wait until next year. For the Cardinals to win in the next round, they need to continue to run the ball and Kurt Warner will need to continue to throw accurate passes to keep drives alive. On defense, the Cardinals will have to step it up on every play to create turnovers. We shall see how the Cardinals do from here.
